Corrosion Resistance and Antifouling Performance of Selective Plated Nickel-based Coatings with Silver Particles
This study presents preliminary findings on the corrosion resistance and antifouling properties of selectively electroplated composite nickel coatings embedded with silver particles A comprehensive characterization was performed, encompassing qualitative X-ray phase analysis and electrochemical corrosion rate measurements. The antifouling performance of the coatings was assessed by monitoring biofouling levels in a controlled laboratory marine environment, with results validated through a 12-week exposure to a natural marine setting. The results demonstrated the successful integration of silver particles into the nickel matrix, significantly enhancing corrosion resistance. The embedded silver microparticles provided direct antibacterial activity, effectively inhibiting biofilm formation in the early stages. Throughout the observation period, no biofouling was detected on the coatings under either laboratory or natural conditions. A slight dull surface discolouration was observed, attributed to the oxidative interactions between silver, nickel, and seawater.
