PHRASEOLOGY AS A SOURCE FOR STUDYING THE ENGLISH MENTALITY

Key words: intercultural communication, culture shock, people’s mentality, phraseological units, zoonyms, collocations, cultural linguistics, linguistic world-image The article presents a method for studying intercultural communication as a one of the most important disciplines through phraseological units (PU) – zoonyms. In the article the precise definition of intercultural communication and phraseology as the linguistic study is given. It is shown that the using of collocations zoonyms brightly expresses people’s mind, in this case English mind, their ways of thinking, values and preferences. The essence of native speakers is revealed with the help of examples and their translation. Theoretical and practical approaches of PU studying is offered. The article also shows the methods of PU studying and the ways of choosing PUs in dictionaries for easy analysis and comparison.
