Emergency Robotic Undocking
INTRODUCTION: Emergency robotic undocking is a time-sensitive procedure that involves quickly removing robotic arms and patient console in order to gain proximity and access to the patient to perform life-saving maneuvers. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this video is to increase preparedness, knowledge, and proficiency of performing emergency robotic undocking, to emphasize the importance of clear communication between team members at all times, and to create a standardized protocol for emergency robotic undocking. METHODS: Surgical training video. RESULTS: During this video, a protocol for emergency undocking is demonstrated for three different situations—conversion to emergent laparotomy, transition to CPR in the case of cardiopulmonary arrest, and conversion to laparoscopy in the case of robotic arm failure. Roles of each member of the surgical team are clearly defined. CONCLUSIONS: Knowledge of emergency undocking is essential for all members of the surgical team participating in robotic surgical cases. The development and implementation of a standardized protocol and simulation of its application with all team members are key to quick and efficient undocking in the case of a surgical emergency.
