How to POP-Q: Educational Video for Trainees
INTRODUCTION: The pelvic organ prolapse–quantification (POP-Q) exam is a key physical exam to measure and stage POP. Despite its widespread use in clinical practice, trainees may have difficulty conceptualizing the exam due to the distorted anatomy. There is a need for an audiovisual approach in reviewing this essential exam, which may benefit trainees. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this film was to create an audiovisual learning tool to explain the different components of the POP-Q and how to perform the exam in a systematic approach. METHODS: The video was created utilizing live footage of a real patient exam and two-dimensional diagrams along with an audio narration. Informed consent was obtained from the patient for filming and submission for educational presentations. RESULTS: This video introduces basic female pelvic anatomy, breaks down the different parts of the POP-Q exam with diagrams, and demonstrates the exam on a live patient. CONCLUSIONS: Due to the distorted anatomy, the POP-Q exam can be confusing for trainees to conceptualize and feel confident in understanding and performing the exam. An audiovisual learning tool may address the gap in educational resources to learn this essential exam in urogynecology.
