Laparoscopic-Assisted Colonoscopic Removal of IUD from Rectum
INTRODUCTION: Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are an increasingly popular and highly effective form of contraception in the United States. Understanding their potential side effects and complications is essential for ensuring their continued utilization. Uterine perforation and IUD migration represent some of the most serious complications, with symptoms that can vary significantly at the time of presentation. Due to the unpredictable nature of IUD migration, the removal of ectopic IUDs can be complex. OBJECTIVE: Demonstrate use of intraoperative laparoscopy and colonoscopy to safely remove a migrated IUD perforating the colon. METHODS: Laparoscopic-assisted colonoscopic removal of migrated IUD perforating the colon. RESULTS: Successful removal of migrated IUD. CONCLUSIONS: This case report examines an asymptomatic instance of an IUD perforating the colon. Initial attempts at removal using a combination of hysteroscopy and laparoscopy were unsuccessful. Ultimately, a combined surgical approach involving laparoscopy and colonoscopy led to the successful removal of the IUD.
