The Impact of Poor Design in the Organization of Green Spaces in the Peripheral Districts of the City of Khenchela (Algeria)

Objectives: This research explores the consequences of inadequate green space design in the peripheral neighborhoods of Khenchela, Algeria. It focuses on three main dimensions: environmental impact (loss of biodiversity and intensification of urban heat islands), social impact (lack of community spaces to foster social interactions), and aesthetic impact (mineral uniformity and absence of quality spaces). The goal is to propose tailored solutions aimed at rehabilitating these spaces by reintegrating natural elements into these urban areas. Theoretical Framework: The study is grounded in theories of sustainable urbanism and the city-nature relationship. It draws on the works of pioneers such as Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Hassan Fathy to examine past and present approaches to integrating green spaces into urban environments. Emerging concepts of resilient urbanism, particularly green and blue infrastructure, enhance the analysis of the local Algerian context. Methodology: The methodological approach is hybrid and includes the following steps: Cartographic Analysis: Identifying critical areas in Khenchela to detect deficiencies in green spaces. Case Studies: Comparing international models such as Barcelona's Superblocks to assess their relevance for Khenchela. Surveys: Distributing questionnaires to 250 residents to gather their perceptions and expectations of public spaces. Field Observations: Conducting photographic documentation to visually assess the shortcomings of existing green spaces. Results and Discussion: The findings reveal an almost complete absence of functional green spaces in the peripheral neighborhoods of Khenchela. This deficiency exacerbates heat island effects, reduces residents’ quality of life, and weakens their connection to the natural environment. Residents express a strong need for accessible public parks, ecological corridors, and green developments that promote community well-being. Research Implications: This study offers recommendations for rehabilitating peripheral neighborhoods, such as: Creating public parks connected by ecological corridors to enhance biodiversity and quality of life. Integrating community gardens to foster social cohesion and resident engagement. Establishing urban policies that prioritize a balance between urban development and ecological preservation. Originality/Value: By addressing an underrepresented Algerian context in the literature on sustainable urbanism, this research makes an original contribution. It proposes solutions adapted to resource-constrained environments and emphasizes the importance of community participation to ensure the sustainability of urban spaces.
