Genetic analysis and breeding prospects of China aster (Callistephus chinensis L.) in an F4 segregating population

The present study was conducted to assess genetic variability, heritability, and genetic advance in the F4 segregating population of China aster (Callistephus chinensis L.). The experiment was carried out at the Department of Floriculture and Landscaping, Kittur Rani Channamma College of Horticulture, Arabhavi, during the Rabi season of 2023-24. A total of fifteen lines derived from the cross Namdhari White × AAC-1, along with their parent varieties, were evaluated in a randomized block design. Observations were recorded on various growth, flowering, yield, and quality parameters. The results indicated that phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) values were generally higher than genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) values, signifying genotype × environment interactions. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance was observed for traits such as the number of branches, number of flowers per plant, individual flower weight, and flower yield per plant, indicating their potential for selection in breeding programs. The study concludes that these traits are valuable in developing high-yielding China aster cultivars with improved floral attributes.
