TUBERCULOSIS AND MEDICINAL PROBIOTIC AGENTS AGAINST TUBERCULOSIS

Tuberculosis remains one of the most common infectious diseases worldwide. The epidemiology of this disease shows that tuberculosis caused by mycobacteria, especially Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is still widespread, especially in developing countries. The study and development of new methods of treatment and prevention of this disease does not lose its relevance due to the growing resistance of mycobacteria to anti-tuberculosis drugs. The current tuberculosis treatment strategy is based on long-term combination therapy using several anti-tuberculosis drugs, including antibiotics. However, the treatment methods used are often accompanied by side effects and negatively affect the human microbiota, which plays a key role in maintaining the health of the respiratory tract and the general condition of the body. According to the results of numerous studies, it can be argued that the imbalance of the microbiota contributes to the worsening of respiratory tract diseases, including tuberculosis. One of the promising directions in the fight against tuberculosis is the use of probiotic microorganisms, including lactic acid bacteria. It is important that no resistant forms of microorganisms are formed in relation to probiotics, which contributes to the treatment of the disease without harm to the microbial community of the body. In addition, traditional medicine offers herbal preparations for the treatment of tuberculosis. According to the literature sources, no information has been found on probiotics that are reliably active against mycobacteria, there are only some works in this field. There is also practically no information about the use of probiotic bacteria in combination with extracts of medicinal plants for the treatment of tuberculosis infection. Probiotic drugs have antimicrobial, immunomodulatory effects and are able to increase the effectiveness of therapy. This review examines modern approaches to the treatment of tuberculosis with an emphasis on the role of probiotics, synbiotics (probiotics with extracts of medicinal plants), and anti-tuberculosis medicinal plants.

Tuberculosis remains one of the most common infectious diseases worldwide.
