Zaštita zbirke mikrofilma digitalizacijom u NUB-u “Sv. Kliment Ohridski” – Skoplje
Following global trends in accessing and exchanging information, the National and University Library “St. Clement of Ohrid” in Skopje prioritizes the digitization of library materials. Recently, the focus has been on the extensive collection of microfilms within the Doctoral Dissertations, Master’s Theses, research project reports, and other microforms. The microfilm collection at the National and University Library represents a significant repository of handwritten materials, rare books, newspapers, and periodicals. Since its establishment, the collection has grown to include approximately 2000 microform units. Digitizing microfilms is a crucial process that enables greater protection, accessibility, promotion, and presentation of culturally and historically important materials. Many of these materials were previously inaccessible in their original form because they are preserved in large libraries in cities such as Zagreb, Belgrade, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sofia, and others. This work will showcase the process of digitizing microfilms carried out through the Strategy for Digitization, Digital Archiving, and Management of Digital Objects at the National and University Library “St. Clement of Ohrid” in Skopje. The library utilizes specialized equipment for scanning this specific type of library material. During digitization, both an archival copy (master file) and a user copy (a derivative of the archival copy with reduced size and resolution) were created. This approach aims to enhance access to digital content through internet presentations and user services provided by the library. The digital collection is accessible through the portal of the Digital Library of Macedonia (dlib.mk) and is an integral part of the country’s most valuable digital library collections.
