Unveiling novel capacity (electro)recovery for Chloranilate-based alkaline redox flow batteries

This study monitors a two-electron chloranilate-ferrocyanide redox flow battery system in alkaline media at 1.1 V, focusing on capacity recovery during charge-discharge operations. Capacity decay is relatively stabilized and restored via electrochemical oxidation process at certain steps. Different concentrations and cycle performances are also tested. • introducing chloranilic acid of lithium salt (lithium chloranilate) as a new and cost-friendly negolyte material for alkaline aqueous flow battery applications. • applying aeration and then systematic (electro)recovery techniques to overcome the capacity decay during charge-discharge operations. • understanding of concentration and pH effects on dimerization process followed by mechanistic proposal which was preliminary supported by 13 C NMR spectroscopy and peroxide test kits.
