Generating Bass Phrases from Guitar Chord Backing with NMF

In this paper, we explore the use of non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) to enhance the automatic generation of bass phrases from the guitar chord backing. Our prior model, which directly learns the bass’s spectrograms, struggles with complex phrases. To segregate melodic and timbral information from spectrograms, we propose the use of NMF. After the separation, our model is solely focused on learning melodic information. We present some examples with our updated model.

Abstract

In this paper, we explore the use of non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) to enhance the automatic generation of bass phrases from the guitar chord backing. Our prior model, which directly learns the bass’s spectrograms, struggles with complex phrases. To segregate melodic and timbral information from spectrograms, we propose the use of NMF. After the separation, our model is solely focused on learning melodic information. We present some examples with our updated model.
