APROVECHAMIENTO DE LOS SISTEMAS AGROFORESTALES DE CAFÉ DESDE UNA PERSPECTIVA DE GÉNERO

Background. In coffee agroforestry systems (CAF-Systems), the allocation of gender roles is markedly distinct, resulting in diverse environmental interactions and differentiated perceptions of available resources. Objective. To analyze the perceived barriers and proposed actions for the effective utilization of CAF-Systems from a gender perspective in the Frailesca region of Chiapas. Methodology. Through an open-ended questionnaire administered to men and women across three municipalities, gender-based perceptual differences were assessed using the odds ratio and a dual mediation model of structural correlations. Results. Women identified barriers such as distance, seasonality, time constraints, and lack of basic services, whereas men highlighted limitations in resources, training, and commercialization. In response, women proposed actions focused on spatial management, crop diversification, and motivational strategies, while men emphasized the need for external support and capacity building. Implications: This underscores the need to design intervention strategies that incorporate a gender perspective to enhance the equity, sustainability, and effectiveness of rural development initiatives within these productive systems. Conclusions. Gender plays a significant role in the perception and utilization of resources in CAF-Systems, with women not only identifying a greater number of resources but also perceiving a wider array of barriers, prompting more development-oriented proposals. These gender-based differences are crucial for designing intervention strategies that are both inclusive and effective, tailored to the specific perspectives and needs of men and women in the management of CAF-Systems.
