Placemaking Design of City Boundary Monument in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia

In early 2023, Surakarta City launched the 17 Priority Development Points program to improve the image of Surakarta City. Development was carried out at several strategic points, such as repairing road corridors and city boundary monuments. One of the boundary monuments built was in Mojosongo, Surakarta. This study aims to analyze the placemaking of boundary monument design, which can introduce the local area to visitors who will enter Surakarta via the Mojosongo route. A quantitative descriptive method assessed the design based on the established parameters. The results of the study found that 82.69% of the monument designs in Mojosongo had implemented placemaking. This value indicates that it is necessary to improve the design of the city boundary monument to improve people’s perceptions of the image, history, and culture of the area. The findings of this placemaking analysis can be used to revise the design of the city boundary monument, if possible, or to make corrections to inform the Surakarta city government, so that the city border monument can be best built to meet the demands of the community and to ensure that the city boundary monument functions optimally.
