Associação entre o desempenho físico, a força muscular e a qualidade de vida de idosos com mieloma múltiplo: um estudo transversal
Multiple Myeloma (MM) is a rare, progressive, and incurable onco-hematological disease that predominantly affects the elderly and can negatively impact Quality of Life (QoL). Changes in the osteomyoarticular system can lead to decreased physical performance and muscle strength. Objective: To associate physical performance, muscle strength, and QoL in elderly individuals with MM. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted where elderly individuals (≥60 years) had their QoL assessed using the Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaire, physical performance was measured using the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, and Hand Grip Strength (HGS) was assessed using hand dynamometry. Data normality was verified using the Shapiro-Wilk test. Pearson or Spearman correlation coefficients were used for statistical analysis. The significance level was set at p ≤ 0.05. The sample consisted of 23 individuals. Results: TUG showed a negative and moderate correlation with the functional capacity (r= -0.6181; p < 0.001) and vitality (r= -0.444; p < 0.033) domains of SF-36. There was no correlation between HGS and SF-36 domains. Conclusion: Good physical performance may be related to a positive perception of QoL in elderly individuals with MM. This was evidenced by the relationship between shorter time on the TUG test and greater functional capacity and vitality. In contrast, there was no association between HGS and SF-36 domains.
