Osmanlı Devleti’nde Birinci Dünya Savaşı’nda Veteriner Hekimler
World War I is a war that pitted the great powers of the period against each other, deeply shook the political, economic and social order and caused great destruction. While war studies focus on operations, the importance of health services directly affecting the war has not been sufficiently expressed. Although studies on human health are partly more prevalent in the literature, studies on veterinary medicine are almost non-existent. By scrutinizing the studies on veterinary history, it can be criticized that the subject has not been addressed sufficiently in terms of the writing of war history. In World War I, animals were one of the most direct and perhaps most important elements of war, as they were used for food, transportation and even cavalry use. It was the duty of veterinarians to protect the health of animals, which undertook important tasks ranging from patient transportation to the transportation of weapons and ammunition. The protection of animal health was one of the keys to victory on the front. Considering epidemic diseases, the diversity of animal species according to the front and climate, and the difficulties encountered in the feeding and sheltering of animals, the importance of veterinarians becomes even more prominent. In this study, the importance of veterinarians in World War I and their recruitment methods will be analyzed through archival documents and printed sources.
