An open-ended questionnaire was administered to collect metaphorical data, asking adult learners to write down words and reasons that come to mind regarding ‘good teaching’ and ‘good instructors.’ Results The study on adult learners' perceptions of “good classes” collected responses consisting of a total of 60 words, which were categorized into six themes: “providing indicators for life,” “efficient management of class time,” “engaging interest that induces immersion,” “offering curriculum appropriate to learners' levels,” “acquisition of practical knowledge,” and “providing expertise in teaching methods.” Ultimately, it was found that a good class is perceived as one that inspires emotion in daily life and provides direction for one's life. In the study on adult learners' perceptions of “good teachers,” responses totaling 40 words were categorized into six themes: “approachable teacher,” “expert teacher,” “empathetic teacher,” “passionate lecturer,” “teacher who respects students,” and “teacher who is worthy of respect.” As a result, a good teacher is perceived as someone who first and foremost possesses expertise, is passionate about their lectures, interacts well with students, and is worthy of respect. Conclusions As seen in the analysis results, adult learners' perceptions of “good classes” and “good teachers” were examined. The findings suggest that instructors should possess the qualities of expertise and passion to inspire a sense of new goals in their students. They must provide high-quality, learner-centered classes that bring students one step closer to achieving their life indicators. Suggestions for future research directions and follow-up studies were also proposed.
