The Effects of the Neighborhood Environment on the Subjective Well-Being of the Elderly in the Community
The neighborhood serves as the primary activity space for the elderly in the city. Due to mobility impairments, the elderly are sensitive to the surrounding neighborhood environment (NE). Therefore, they may need a more conducive NE. In order to improve the subjective well-being (SWB) of the elderly, this study aims to investigate the effects of NE on their SWB. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 196 elderly selected from three communities. The NE-SWB model has been established based on reliability tests, correlation analysis, and regression analysis. The Research findings showed that (1) satisfaction with activity space, hydrology, medical and health facilities, noise, and barrier-free access enhances SWB of the elderly; and (2) satisfaction with intergenerational space and vehicle parking location reduces SWB of the elderly. Based on research, recommendations have been proposed to enhance NE and improve SWB of the elderly, including improving barrier-free access, enhancing medical service in the community, and so on.
