A CFD Simulation‐Based High‐Fidelity Database for Data‐Driven Wake Model Considering Wind Farm Active Yaw Control

ABSTRACT A thorough understanding of turbine wakes is essential for various aspects of wind energy, including turbine siting, load evaluation, and wind farm control. However, high‐fidelity time‐domain computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations that consider all possible turbulent inflow wind conditions are computationally expensive and impractical for offshore wind turbine design and wind farm control. To overcome these challenges, constructing and utilizing an equivalent wake database present a more practical solution. This paper introduces a wake database based on the DTU 10‐MW reference wind turbine, aimed at providing a comprehensive wake model under steady inflow and operational conditions, such as mean wind speed and yaw‐misalignment angle. The statistical wake database for yawed wind turbines is created using high‐resolution numerical simulations that employ overlap and adaptive mesh refinement techniques. Velocity and turbulence intensity distributions at fixed wake positions are modeled using a surrogate approach based on a fifth‐order Gaussian curve. Comparisons between the fitted curves and the original data show a strong agreement. The wake profiles demonstrate a reduction in velocity deficit and turbulence intensity due to variations in yaw angle and direction, highlighting the significant impact of yawed operation on wake dynamics.
