A Machine Learning Framework For Efficient Malware Detection and Classification

Malware detection is a very important aspect of cybersecurity, it is the act of monitoring computer systems, networks and/or data to identify malicious software (malware) such as viruses and ransomware in addition to spyware or phishing threats. As malware continues to evolve, more traditional methods such as signature-based and heuristic detection are often inadequate, especially against the ever-increasing number of new and sophisticated threats, zero-day attacks. This has in turn paved the way for the rise of machine learning (ML) as a more flexible and efficient solution. This is where machine learning comes into play; specialized algorithms, trained on extensive datasets, can identify intricate patterns and behaviours that elude traditional systems. Unlike signature-based systems which depend upon identifiable markers of known malware, ML can more thoroughly examine characteristics like network traffic, file behaviour, and API calls to find even novel or altered malware classifications. The detection accuracy was improved by a number of artificial techniques, including Decision Trees, SVM and Random Forests, lowering the rate of false positives. In this process, feature engineering has a significant impact. With this analysis based on multiple features like system calls, file signatures and network patterns ML models can make accurate predictions. Understanding malware requires techniques such as static analysis (investigating file code) and dynamic analysis (watching behaviour). Collectively, these developments combine to make ML an effective method of detecting both existing and new threats.
