Design, Development and Implementation of Sensor-less Speed Estimated Wind Turbine Emulator
Renewable energy resources are essential to combat climate change, to reduce pollution and ensure sustainable energy supply which reduces the dependency on fossil fuels. Wind energy resource, a promising greener energy resource which faces significant challenges in practical experimentation due to large space requirement availability of locations, high initial costs and the unpredictability of wind patterns. These factors make real-time analysis and optimization of wind turbines difficult. To address these limitations, this article proposes a wind turbine emulator(WTE) that replicates the actual turbine behavior in a controlled environment. This emulator features a controllable separately excited DC motor coupled with three phase salient pole synchronous generator, AC-DC converter with DC power emulation control enabling the real-time wind turbine character-istics replication in DC motor. The control algorithm employed in the emulator is based on a closed- loop control system which regulates motor speed by using a graphical programming platform LabViewsoftware for real-time instrument control. The wind turbine model is created within LabViewusing turbine parameters such as Wind speed, tip speed ratio, pitch angle, power coefficient. This approach is validated in a simple sensor less hardware setup of motor-generator set, in which the generated power is fed to grid through grid connected converter, demonstrating significant improvements in the reliability and helps in performance analysis of wind energy conversion systems. The experimental tests were conducted to study the static and dynamic behavior of wind turbine under various conditions which aims to analyze specific performance metrics and quantify the system benefits.
