Estimation of the Volume and the Surface Area of a Charcoal Kiln based on the Paraboloid and the Terrestrial Laser Scanning

Charcoal kilns are one of the most important assets in Kubang Badak, Langkawi Island. They can be utilized by the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) to help maintain the UNESCO Global Geopark status that Langkawi Island has held since 2007. However, the charcoal kilns have deteriorated, and only a partial section of their original construction remains. If LADA wishes to reconstruct the complete form any of the kilns, LADA firstly needs to understand the original form of the kilns before any reconstruction planning can be undertaken. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to apply surveying technology called as the terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and a few terminologies in multivariable calculus to depict the complete shape of one of the charcoal kilns. The data collected from the TLS will be further processed before the paraboloid is used to model the complete shape of the kiln. After that, numerical examples on using the model in estimating the volume and the surface area will be given.
