Securing Electronic Health Records: A blockchain-Enhanced Attribute-Based Encryption Approach

This research introduces a User Authentication Data-Sharing (UADS) framework that leverages Blockchain technology. The UADS framework entails multiple hospital servers collaborating to establish a consortium blockchain network, ensuring transparency, immutability, and authenticity of patients’ Electronic Health Record (EHR) data. This enables doctors to securely share or retrieve a patient’s EHR metadata through the blockchain network, providing enhanced security and trust for real-time applications utilizing medical data. The data-sharing protocol in the UADS framework is based on a Proof-of-Reputation consensus algorithm within the blockchain network. Security analysis using the AVISPA tool demonstrates the framework’s resilience against active and passive attacks. Furthermore, the UADS framework’s security is validated using the random oracle model based on the computational difficulty of the Elliptic Curve-based Diffie-Hellman (ECCDH) problem. The mutual authentication feature of the framework is validated using the BAN logic model. In addition, the communication, execution, and storage costs of the UADS framework are evaluated under various security levels using the PBC library. Finally, the proposed UADS framework is evaluated in comparison to current solutions..
