Scalable Smart Home Management with ESP32-S3: A Low-Cost Solution for Accessible Home Automation

Assistive technology plays a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life, independence and emotional well-being of individuals with disabilities. Despite advancements in this field, there remains limited use of internet-based remote controllers in assistive devices. This paper presents a cost-effective., internet-connected universal remote-control system based on the ESP32-S3 System on Chip (SoC) capable of controlling multiple home devices such as TVs, air conditioners, smart appliances, and lighting via smartphones or tablets. The proposed system integrates competitive features like cost-effectiveness, low power, high-performance wireless communication (Wi-Fi and Bluetooth) in addition to a high level of scalability. By leveraging the capabilities of the ESP32-S3 chip, we offer an efficient solution for home automation, a promising area within assistive technology. The paper also highlights the importance of intuitive and accessible control interfaces to increase user autonomy among people with physical disabilities.
