Fog-Enabled Metaverse: Common Points in an Industry 5.0 Context
The industrial Metaverse is a virtual world where people and smart machines can meet, work, and interact. It is a constantly evolving domain where physical production assets such as machines, factories, grids, and transportation systems, along with human operators, are represented by interactive virtual objects. However, creating such a virtual world requires an efficient process for data collection, processing, and transmission that can meet real-time requirements. To address this challenge, Fog-based architecture has been designed to cope with the massive data processing and transmission needs by splitting the processing task over a set of parallel Fog nodes. This technology is more cost-effective and efficient for industries. In this paper, we explore the use of the Fog computing architecture for deploying industrial metaverse applications. We identify and explain the challenges that arise during this deployment, with the aim of facilitating their resolution. To meet the real-time requirements of Industry 5.0 application, we propose an industrial metaverse architecture based on Fog-computing nodes. This architecture will enable efficient data collection, processing, and transmission while providing a virtual world where people and machines can interact seamlessly.
