Edge-Based IoT Architecture for Vibration Analysis

The objective of this work is to design and demonstrate an edge computing-based IoT architecture for vibration analysis, primarily using in structural monitoring. The system employs microcontroller-based sensor nodes equipped with Zig-bee communication protocol to capture and transmit vibration data to an IoT gateway which performs the necessary computation, and sends the analysis results to actuator nodes for real-time control or visualization. The data is also forwarded to a cloud server for long-term storage. This approach enables real-time monitoring and analysis of vibrations, providing insights into potential faults and reducing latency and computational load on central servers. In this paper, the proposed system is implemented to perform vibration analysis on a cantilever beam as an example. The analysis performed and the results obtained are presented to support the feasibility of the system. The proposed system achieves 98% accuracy in detecting a damaged cantilever beam, with a latency of 2s as compared to a 5s latency for a cloud-based IoT architecture. The proposed system can be extended to any real-world application.
