Rule-Based Peak Shaving Using Battery Energy Storage with a Case Study Analysis
In recent times, energy management in low-voltage distribution networks has become increasingly important, driven by the need for energy efficiency, cost reductions, and alignment with global environmental goals. Peak shaving plays a key role in this framework, benefiting both electricity consumers and grid operators by mitigating voltage fluctuations, lowering component capacity requirements, and decreasing both energy costs and power losses. This study reviews several peak shaving strategies and highlights their practical applications, with a focus on an enhanced rule-based peak shaving (RBPS) technique that takes into account the constraints of grid power import and export. Additionally, a case study is conducted on an academic institution utilizing a photovoltaic (PV) system and battery to analyze how peak shaving influences yearly energy cost savings. The findings show that the combined use of PV and battery with peak shaving led to a 68.48% reduction in total energy costs over the course of the year.
