Preliminary Power Hardware in the Loop Simulation of a Microgrid Test Bench in OPAL-RT

This document outlines the deployment of a microgrid test bench using a Power Hardware in the Loop (PHIL) simulation. The microgrid is designed around the RT-LAB software, the Opal-RT 4510 simulator, and the OP8110 power amplifier. The primary goal of this project is to develop a test bench for educational and research purposes. Achieving this requires a comprehensive understanding of the key aspects of a PHIL simulation, particularly during the design of the RT-LAB model. The microgrid includes two inverters, both realized through hardware implementations. The physical test bench incorporates Imperix PEB8024 modules, while the utility grid equivalent circuit is simulated within the Opal-RT 4510, creating a real-time simulation environment to test various concepts. The system’s stability is validated through experimental results, demonstrating successful transitions between open-loop and closed-loop operation.
