Sustainable Management of Natural Resources: Focus on Forest Resources Management

Forests are vital ecosystems that provide essential ecological, economic, and social benefits. This presentation explores the sustainable management of forest resources, emphasizing their critical roles in biodiversity conservation, climate regulation, and enhancing community livelihoods. Forests act as carbon sinks, support soil health, and sustain the water cycle, playing a key role in mitigating climate change. Additionally, they contribute to economies through timber, medicinal plants, and ecotourism while preserving environmental integrity. Focusing on Sri Lanka, the presentation examines the spatial distribution of forests and trends in deforestation and degradation. It evaluates forest management strategies such as agroforestry (integrating trees into farming systems), community forestry (local governance), commercial forestry (economic outputs), social forestry (community needs), and conservation forestry (biodiversity protection). These practices are analyzed through the lens of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), highlighting their relevance to afforestation, biodiversity preservation, and sustainable forest use. Practical insights are drawn from case studies of the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Knuckles Mountain Range, a critical ecological and water catchment area. These examples illustrate challenges and successes in forest conservation and demonstrate the importance of aligning local actions with global sustainability efforts. The presentation concludes by emphasizing the shared responsibility of governments, communities, and individuals in ensuring forest sustainability. It calls for innovative management practices, policy reforms, and active community participation to address challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource scarcity, ensuring forests' protection for future generations.

Forests are vital ecosystems that provide essential ecological, economic, and social benefits. This presentation explores the sustainable management of forest resources, emphasizing their critical roles in biodiversity conservation, climate regulation, and enhancing community livelihoods.
