ANALISIS KESALAHAN MAHASISWA PENDIDIKAN MATEMATIKA DALAM MEMAHAMI DAN MENYELESAIKAN SOAL INDUKSI MATEMATIKA PADA MATERI PENGANTAR GRUP BERDASARKAN TEORI KASTOLAN

Mathematics education students often face difficulties in understanding and solving problems related to mathematical induction, particularly in introductory group theory. This study aims to identify and analyze students' errors in induction proof based on Kastolan’s Theory, which classifies errors into three categories: conceptual, procedural, and technical. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, this research involved 20 fourth-semester mathematics education students. Data were collected through diagnostic tests and document analysis of students' work. The findings reveal that students frequently make conceptual errors in selecting the appropriate formula and understanding the steps of proof. Procedural errors arise due to inconsistencies in structuring proof steps and difficulties in simplifying problems to their final form. Additionally, technical errors are commonly found in the form of inaccuracies in algebraic calculations and symbol manipulation. These findings emphasize the need for more effective learning strategies, such as scaffolding and group discussions, to enhance students' understanding of mathematical induction concepts.
