The Design and Research of a 28 GHz TE12 Mode Second Harmonic Gyrotron with Iris Cavity

The gyrotron is the microwave source device, and the utilization of harmonic operation to reduce its operating magnetic field is a critical development direction for the gyrotron. This paper presents the theory research of a gyrotron at second harmonic with frequency of 28 GHz. We choose TE<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">12</inf> mode as the working mode, and adopt iris structure as the optimization structure to improve the quality factor of the resonant cavity to obtain high efficiency microwave energy output. A self-developed cold-cavity code is utilized to study the characteristics of the resonator cavity, and the linear theory about beam wave interaction of gyrotron and nonlinear theory about beam wave interaction of gyrotron are used to research the mode competition among different modes. After detailed numerical calculations, we finally obtain a gyrotron that can obtain a microwave energy output at operating efficiency of 32.1% and outpower of 14.45 kW.
