Designing a Habit Forming Mobile Application for Disaster Preparedness Using the Hooked Model

The frequent occurrence of natural disasters in Indonesia highlights a pressing need for innovative strategies to strengthen disaster preparedness across communities. Despite increased awareness, research reveals a persistent gap between disaster knowledge and preparedness behaviors, with many communities falling short of readiness targets. This study proposes a disaster preparedness mobile application developed using the Hooked Model to address these behavioral gaps and encourage habit formation around preparedness activities. Utilizing a Design Thinking approach, the study incorporates the Hooked Model’s four key stages (trigger, action, reward, and investment) into the app design to drive consistent user engagement. Initial findings suggest that the integration of notifications as triggers, simple tasks for user actions, gamified rewards, and user driven feedback can foster sustained preparedness habits. This approach demonstrates the potential of behavioral frameworks to innovate public safety applications, advancing disaster resilience through user engagement. Future research will focus on prototype testing to evaluate the model’s impact on long-term preparedness behaviors.
