Being An Academic Doesn't Free You From Violence: Women's Experiences in the Field of Agricultural Sciences
Objective: To understand the experiences of violence experienced by female academics working in institutions with a focus on agricultural sciences. Theoretical Framework: This study is based on theoretical foundations from a gender perspective and on violence in educational settings and how it affects women in the workplace, which has negative effects on various aspects of their lives. Method: The methodology was qualitative with a gender perspective. A survey was conducted with 92 female academics, and ten in-depth interviews were conducted with professors and researchers working in institutions related to agricultural sciences. Results and Discussion: It was found that the majority of women interviewed reported having experienced violence in some form, highlighting inequalities in gender-based social relations and greater vulnerability when they are in subordinate and lower-ranking positions. The violence experienced ranges from physical, workplace, emotional, and sexual violence. It is evident that patriarchal power relations continue to be present even in academic settings. Research Implications: Based on this research, policies can be established that allow for greater equality and better relationships between male and female academics. Originality/Value: This research contributes to increasing knowledge about workplace violence among female professors working in agricultural science disciplines, suggesting the need for institutions to take measures to address this issue.
