Flexible Operation of Combined cycle Gas Based Power Plants in Western Region, India
Indian Power Sector is continuously evolving with the integration of significant renewable capacity i.e. 500GW by 2030 [1]. To integrate the substantial renewable generation capacity into the grid, flexible generation resources need to be harnessed to the extent possible for which several measures are being implemented in India i.e. reducing the minimum turndown level of thermal plants to 40% from 55%, rejuvenating existing imported coal and gas-based power plants. Efforts are also made to increase the penetration of hydroelectric, pumped storage plants and battery energy storage systems in the Indian energy mix. This paper examines the operational practices of gas based power plants in Western Region of India, analyzing historical data to identify opportunities for enhanced flexibility. By exploring the current operational practices, the paper aims to unlock the full flexibility potential, enabling gas based plants to effectively support the integration of renewable energy sources.
