Time trend for diabetes mellitus mortality in Bahia from 2011 to 2021
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major chronic non-communicable disease (NCDs) today, requiring efforts to contain its increased prevalence and incidence and reduce its acute and chronic complications. Understanding mortality trends due to DM can provide clues about the quality of health services and care for diabetic patients in a given region, as DM is sensitive to outpatient monitoring and its mortality is, to a large extent, preventable. Hence, this research describes the temporal trend for DM mortality in Bahia, Brazil, from 2011 to 2021. An observational, descriptive, time series study with spatial analysis was conducted using aggregated secondary data. During the study period, 57,609 deaths from DM were reported in Bahia. Most registered deaths were female (55.58%), mixed race (60.12%) and aged 80 or over (32.71%). DM mortality rate in the state showed an upward trend in the 2011-2021 period (β = 0.865; R2 =0.748; p = 0.001), with disparate trends between different regions. Between the years 2020 and 2021, Bahia saw an increase in DM mortality rate as well as in all its NRS.
