Design and Optimization of an IGCT Gate Drive Turn-On Circuit for DC Circuit Breaker Applications
Integrated Gate-Commutated Thyristors (IGCTs) have been widely used in DC circuit breakers to replace traditional power electronic devices due to their excellent ability to withstand surge currents and fast switching characteristics. For the DC circuit breaker's high short-circuit current amplitude and high rise rate requirements during opening, an IGCT gate drive turn-on circuit suitable for this condition is designed. The design combines the low-frequency characteristics of the circuit breaker's single-time on/off operation, and the device parameters are designed specifically. The PCB layout is optimized to minimize the stray inductance of the circuit. Through simulation and experimental verification, a strong triggering current of 488A amplitude and 6190A/μs was successfully achieved. To mitigate circuit risks, optimization measures are also proposed to effectively suppress the MOSFET voltage spikes and reverse voltage. It can improve the stability and reliability of the drive board. This work provides an effective solution for IGCT drive design in the operating conditions of DC circuit breakers, with good application prospects.
