Memory and Meaning through Glass, a Group of Stained-Glass Windows at New York’s Temple Emanu-El
Abstract This article explores a group of stained-glass windows which depict historic synagogues in New York City’s Temple Emanu-El. Included in this group are four windows from the congregation’s previous buildings. At the time of construction in 1929 all nine of the historic synagogues still stood. After the Holocaust two were destroyed. How does the meaning of these windows change from a historic depiction to memorial and why did the congregation choose to depict these buildings alongside images of their past?
