An Empirical Study on Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) Among Indonesian Esports Players

IGD has been a growing phenomenon that is potentially experienced by video gamers. Esports, a rapidly growing competitive gaming sector, has been linked to IGD. The growth of the Indonesian esports industry increases the potential of IGD among its players. This study aims to examine the prevalence of IGD among esports players in Indonesia and analyze the correlation between gender, age, daily gaming duration, weekly playing frequency, and most played games with IGD. The IGD was measured using the Internet Gaming Disorder Scale 9-Short Form (IGDS9-SF). The findings obtained from this research were that of 150 gamers, only 8% showed symptoms of Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD). All the participants indicated with IGD are males. The correlation analysis showed that daily gaming duration and weekly playing frequency are correlated with IGD. The gaming behavior of esports players who tend to spend a lot of time practicing and playing may lead to IGD development. The flow state may explain this phenomenon. Comprehending the gaming behaviors that are associated with Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) can facilitate the formulation of preventive and interventional strategies, particularly for esports players.
