A novel hybrid auxetic honeycomb with enhanced load-bearing capability and ultra-low frequency band gaps

Abstract This paper presents a novel chiral diamond-shaped honeycomb metamaterial (CDH-M), which combines chiral geometries with conventional external rhombic structures. The resulting structure exhibits significantly improved structural stability while maintaining efficient vibration mitigation. The equivalent Young’s modulus of the designed metamaterial is determined via finite element method (FEM) simulations to assess its load-bearing capacity. Experimental studies are conducted to validate the simulation results. Moreover, the band gap (BG) formation mechanism is analyzed via modal analysis to evaluate the in-plane vibration attenuation capability of the material. The results demonstrate that the proposed structure effectively combines vibration attenuation and load-bearing capabilities, making it promising for advanced industrial applications.
