Enhancing Poultry Farming in Malawi: Sustainable Practices for Chick Development and Socio-Economic Growth

Abstract This study provides a detailed examination of chick development and management practices crucial for enhancing poultry farming under an extensive poultry production system in Malawi. Covering various stages of chick development such as fertilization, embryonic growth, hatching and brooding, it emphasizes the importance of maintaining optimal environmental conditions, providing proper nutrition, implementing effective disease control, and brooding techniques. Newcastle disease (ND) and predation have been identified as major setbacks for extensive poultry farming in the first 6 weeks of chick growth. Therefore, the study recommends the vaccination of chicks against ND and the use of effective predation prevention techniques like basket rearing, respectively. Sustainable poultry farming practices highlighted in the study support socio-economic growth and poverty alleviation and address malnutrition. The study aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals and aims to provide a framework for improving poultry farming practices in developing countries. Information © The Author 2025
