Epidemiology of Zika Virus in the State of Tocantins

Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the epidemiology of the Zika virus in the state of Tocantins - Brasil, aiming to establish the social, economic, and environmental patterns of the disease. Theoretical Framework: The epidemiological reports from 2023 show an increase in the notification of Zika virus infection cases in the state of Tocantins. The disease is associated with sequelae leading to high morbidity and mortality due to congenital defects, which could be prevented through proper health prevention measures. Method: Secondary data obtained through the Notification of Compulsory Diseases System (SINAN/DATASUS) were analyzed. The data were refined using Excel, ArcGIS, and Geoda software. Results and Discussion: The disease has multiple factors related to its transmission. However, the coverage of primary health care is inversely related to the number of reported cases in all years. Precipitation levels and proximity to BR-153 show a direct relationship. Research Implications: The epidemiological profile allows for the definition of goals to combat potential outbreaks in specific municipalities and populations. Originality/Value: This study is the first to define the epidemiology of the Zika virus in the state of Tocantins. The results establish the most vulnerable areas in the state, as well as the periods with the highest number of notifications.
