Determination of diagnostic reference levels and evaluation of radiological practices in mammography at Bingerville Mother-Child Hospital, Cote d'Ivoire
X-rays are a major asset major advantage in medecine, particulary for diagnosis. However, their use is not without risks. According to several studies conducted by the international Atomic Energy and scientific organization, it is recommended to reinforce the principle of optimization in diagnostic radiology by establishing Diagnostic Reference Levels. The purpose of this study is to determine diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) in order to evaluate radiological practices and reduce the doses received by patients during mammography examinations at the Bingerville Mother-Child hospital of Bingerville. (MCH). The work was s carried out on a sample of 50 patients at the Mother and Child Hospital in Bingerville. Mean glandular dose (MGD) values were obtained using a GE Essential senograph. The diagnostic reference level (DRL) for mean glandular dose was determined using the 75th percentile statistical method, giving the following result: Craniocaudal incidence = 1.59 mGy and Mediolateral incidence = 1.97 mGy. Comparing our DRL values for craniocaudal and mediolateral incidences with those of the IAEA and some countries indicates that our MGD value is encouraging as we have the smallest value. However our MGD DRL value for mediolateral incidence is higher than which obtained in Morocco and Thailand. This dose optimization at the Mother-Child Hospital of Bingerville demonstrates vigorous practice that complie with the principle of radiation protection.
