Tool use by a wild Blue Jay ( Cyanocitta cristata )
We provide photographic documentation of an adult Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata) in an apparent attempt to use a piece of bark to extract a spider that appeared to be hiding beneath a different piece of bark on the branch of a pine tree.Although Blue Jays were observed using tools to obtain food in captivity over 50 years ago, this is the first report of Blue Jay tool use in the wild.
