O Partido Conservador inglês e a guinada extremista: euroceticismo e populismo no caminho do Brexit
The objective of this article is to analyze the extremist turn of the English Conservative Party that occurred at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, seeking to understand the reasons why the reconfiguration of a traditional and historically liberal party into a party whose flirtation with populism would end up being a decisive factor in the United Kingdom's departure from the European Union, in the process known as Brexit. As a methodology, the process tracing technique was used to analyze the causal mechanisms of the process and the sufficient and necessary conditions that led to the party's new paradigms. As results, the article points to the reconfiguration of the post-Margareth Thatcher party in the 1970s and 1980s, the 2008 crisis and the populist situation of 2016 as crucial factors in the party's rearrangement.
