A NOVEL DEVICE FOR SELF-POWERED LYOPHILIZED VACCINE RECONSTITUTION AND INTRADERMAL DELIVERY
Due to the complexity of the Mantoux technique for intradermal (ID) vaccine administration, requiring sufficiently trained healthcare personnel [1], the intramuscular route remains the standard clinical practice [2].One potential solution to enable painless and user-friendly ID vaccine administration are microneedles which might, via coupling to delivery systems, empower self-administration.Previously reported delivery devices required manual activation [3] (being user-friendly, but advanced handling of vaccine not possible) or required external pumps [4] (advanced vaccine handling, but not user-friendly).Here, we present a novel, self-powered microfluidic device that enables (1) on-chip reconstitution and homogenization of lyophilized vaccine and (2) reproducible subsequent ID delivery by using the iSIMPLE technology [5-6].To our knowledge, this is the first report of a device enabling these two steps upon a user-friendly single activation step.
