Design and analysis of series LC network based high gain boost converter

This paper presents a novel approach to the design of a fifth-order boost converter with voltage gain ( 1 + D / 1 − D ), which is transformed into a partial resonant converter by leveraging the resonating characteristics of a series L C network. The converter with proposed design approach (CwPDA) operates in four distinct modes in continuous conduction mode (CCM), including a newly discovered mode of zero current switching (ZCS) commutation. While the converter exhibits six modes in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). The primary contribution of this work is the introduction of a bi-directional current flow in the series L C network, discovery of ZCS in CCM, identification of transition state from CCM to DCM, and an efficiency estimation model. The results show that the CwPDA offers superior efficiency compared to similar converters, primarily due to the reduced switching losses enabled by ZCS commutation. Furthermore, the CwPDA demonstrates a wider power band with minimal variation in duty cycle ( D ) and less efficiency decay when operating beyond the designed load resistance ( R L ). Simulation studies confirm the functionality and effectiveness of the proposed converter, and hardware prototype experiments validate its operation and ZCS commutation. In conclusion, the CwPDA converter not only improves efficiency and performance but also introduces new insights into the operation of boost converters with resonant features, making it a significant advancement over traditional designs. • A single switch fifth-order boost converter is transformed into a resonant converter. • Bi-directional current flow from the series L C network. • Switching losses are less because of ZCS commutation.
