Tourism development in the mountainous regions of the North Caucasus

Introduction. The article analyses the tourism potential and prospects of tourism development in three mountainous republics of the North Caucasus: the Chechen Republic, North Ossetia-Alania and Kabardino-Balkaria. The region has unique natural and cultural resources attractive for various categories of tourists. However, despite its considerable potential, the development of the tourism industry is constrained by a number of factors, including the geopolitical situation and limited transport accessibility. The article discusses the possibilities of overcoming these difficulties and achieving sustainable development of the tourism sector. Methods. The methodology of the study is based on the analysis of available data on the tourism potential of each of the republics. The study used a combined method, including the analysis of secondary data (statistical information on tourism, descriptions of tourist attractions, information on infrastructure development) and qualitative analysis (assessment of tourism potential taking into account the unique features of each region). The methods of comparative analysis and systematisation were used to assess the impact of various factors on tourism development. Results. The results of the research have shown that each republic has a unique tourism potential. The Chechen Republic focuses on the development of cultural, historical and ethnographic tourism. North Ossetia-Alania is focused on active and ecological tourism. Kabardino-Balkaria is actively developing mountain tourism and mountaineering. Successful tourism development in all three republics requires increased investment in infrastructure development, including the creation of modern hotels, improvement of the road network and the development of new tourist routes. A key factor is the introduction of digital technologies to promote tourism products and improve customer service. Effective branding and marketing campaigns also play an important role in attracting tourists. Conclusions. The article emphasises the need for a comprehensive approach to the development of the tourism sector in the North Caucasus. Given the unique potential of each republic, it is important to create specialised tourism products and actively introduce modern technologies. Only such an approach will make it possible to fully realise the region’s tourism potential and ensure its sustainable development despite the existing challenges. It is necessary to coordinate the efforts of local authorities, tourism businesses and investments in infrastructure and marketing.
