Glazed White Ware from Damatris Palace in Istanbul
Among the Glazed White Wares (GWW) found in Damatris Palace, there are many vessels of group II and IV. In addition to these finds, plain glazed and spatter painted fragments were also found. Constantinople and its hinterland are considered as the main production center of white ware glazed ceramics. Another possible production center is suggested as Nicaea. The examples of GWWII type are the plates and bowls decorated with impressed patterns. On the late versions reddish/brown brush strokes are applied at the rims of plates. Undecorated and GWWII ceramics are mainly dated in a period between the 9-12th centuries. Among the GWWIV vessels, there are plates and bowls decorated with painted geometric patterns or animals. This type is one of the most important productions in Constantinople in 12th-13th centuries. The white fabric spatter wares must have been produced between 9th and 12th centuries.
