Spanish Lustreware in the forest zone of Eastern Europe
Spanish luster pottery is one of the rarest finds in cities of Eastern Europe forest zone. Italian merchants brought a lot of such luxurious tableware to the cities on the northern coast of the Black Sea, from where it penetrated into the steppes, but only a few vessels penetrated further north, into the forests. There are 2 categories of such ceramics known here - “Pula type” and “classical” Valencian. Archaeological finds of Spanish luster vessels were discovered mainly in Moscow, and in 2011 a series of fragments was found at the suburban estate of Metropolit of Rus Cyprian, who could have brought a set of Spanish dishes from Constantinople.
