Some Remarks on the Re-Consumption of Early Byzantine Stamped Bricks in Medieval and Post-Medieval Structures in Thessaloniki
The paper presents briefly the various types of brickstamps from Thessaloniki, adding some unknown —documented for the first time— brickstamps, found in recent excavations. Additionally, by documenting the pattern of their extended reuse in Medieval and Post-Medieval, both secular and ecclesiastical, structures in the city, propounds some remarks regarding their —occasionally ignored— re-consumption by the Middle and Late Byzantine society and certain Post-Byzantine, social and religious, groups as well. Therefore, the paper attempts to showcase the re-consumption of these brickstamps for purpose different than their original one, to figure out their new social and ideological connotation, as well to point out their social significance in periods far after their production.
