A Proposal of Permanent Magnet Transverse Flux Generator for Large Wind Turbine Generation System
A new design is proposed for a synchronous generator suitable for a large wind turbine generation system based on the so-called transverse flux (TF) concept. Following the conventional design method using the electric and magnetic loadings, basic dimension and the shapes of the cores, windings, and the rotor are determined, followed by FEM analysis to get expected voltage waves and the synchronous reactance, which leads to an approximate maximum output power. Based on the analysis our machine might be able to generate as much as 6MW and it is confirmed that the torque density is relatively higher compared to the existing designs of the similar machines. If the transient strength of the proposed machine is in the tolerable range, it will be one of the promising candidates for the future wind turbine generator particularly for the usage as the offshore large systems.
